THE SCIENCE IS IN: POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS IS A BIOLOGICAL INJURY AND IT CAN NOW BE RESET FOR EVERYONE

PTSD PTSI IS NOT A MENTAL ILLNESS

THE INJURY

trauma is not a disorder, but rather a physical injury to the body—invisible but tangible, and most importantly, now fixable.

The world has long misunderstood trauma. Despite its prevalence, post-traumatic stress, commonly known as PTSD, not a disorder but actually an injury, is often seen as an unbeatable lifelong mental disorder. We now know trauma is a physical injury, and you can see it on a brain scan. Anxiety, Sleeplessness, Paranoia, Reactivity, Hyper-vigilance. We think of these as mental illness. The Invisible Machine illustrates the primary source of these symptoms as an injury to the nervous system.

The symptoms of post-traumatic stress injury are the same for all of us, whether from childhood poverty or abandonment, the ravages of war, or the brutality of sexual assault. A Yoga instructor, a CEO, and a first-responder can all have this injury inside them.

THE INNOVATION

In the book Jamie explains how Eugene pioneered a simple, safe procedure (based on a century-old pain anesthetic procedure) that successfully treats trauma called the Dual Sympathetic Reset (DSR). His discovery and innovation was endorsed by President Obama in 2008. His research has an 80-85% success rate in reducing the effects of trauma.

DSR treats the root of the physical problem—the overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system, or what he calls the overactivation of the invisible machine.

This is the most profound medical discovery since the discovery of penicillin in 1928, and the greatest Human innovation since the Moon Landing in 1969—and no one is talking about it.  This astonishing innovation goes far beyond Navy SEALs and Special Forces, and is the primary reason for not only mass-incarceration, but much of the mental ills plaguing our society.

THE IMPLICATION

This biological injury may be driving much of what we’re seeing in terms of social breakdown from rising rates of mental illness, to pervasive impulse crime, and conflict in cities around the world. Anxiety, hypervigilance, and hyperarousal, as well as confrontational behavior can be linked directly to this biological mechanism.

By recognizing post-traumatic stress as a physical injury, you remove the stigma that comes from having a mental disorder.

Weaving hard science with moving human stories from warriors, prisoners, abuse survivors, and the average citizen in a riveting and hopeful read, The Invisible Machine tells the incredible story of the unlikely team, including the doctor, an artist, Special Forces leadership, and a sheriff, who are working together to change our understanding of post-traumatic stress and why it matters to us all.

—JOHN “JAY” FABER, MD, double board-certified forensic trauma specialist and former national medical director for Humana’s behavioral health division

“Dr. Lipov discovered and perfected a modern treatment for Post Traumatic Stress. He understands how my patients hurt and has helped them heal. His work with Jamie Mustard is an amplifier of change. This book rewrites the narrative of trauma as a physical injury and is a must read.”

—FRANK OCHBERG, MD, founding father of trauma science and doctor who coined the terms ‘Stockholm syndrome’ and ‘post-traumatic stress injury

“In The Invisible Machine, Lipov and Mustard rewrite the recovery narrative for many who have experienced personal disruptions and life compromises. Through personal stories we learn that traumatic experiences may lock the nervous system into a chronic state of defense and fight-flight behaviors, while compromising feelings of safety and sociality.
